Someone out up a “jail soros” sign in a busy intersection, across from a elementary school, on public property. Is there a legitimate argument to be made here, or is this just dog whistle anti-Semitism? I got a feeling it’s the latter, in which case, hold on and let me get my scissors.

Could be none, some or all those things.

Chances are it’s just some mouth-breather regurgitating what he’s read on alt-right media. If it’s on public property, I say have at it. Replace it with a big photo of Ivanka captioned “Lock her up!” just for sheets & giggles.

Yeah, I don't want to be too reactionary, but I struggle to think of a legit thought process here.

Soros is seen as a boogeyman by many on the right because he e donates large sums of money to very divisive political causes and claims that America is the greatest threat to the world, and both ends of the political spectrum and running wild with conspiracy theories these days . I don’t really care for Soros’ views. He’s an un likable person to anyone who isn’t far-left leaning.
YOU’RE A RACIST, AND YOU’RE A RACIST, AND YOU’RE A RACIST! EVERYONE’S A RACIST!!!!!!!!

S mart, wealthy guy with a Jewish name that gives money to progressive campaigns. Honestly, I’m kinda surprised UK folks are less annoyed with him for the whole pound short sell thing (which was brilliant) than US hard core conservative folks are...

The current conspiracy theory is that Soros is funding the migrant caravans to subvert American democracy and derail Trump.
With all the things Soros has allegedly backed how is he not somehow more wealthy than our lord and saviour Jeff Bezos?

If we also jail Sheldon Adelson, is it double-anti-semitism?

I wouldn’t call it “ legitimate” anything. Put a “Jail Koch” sign right next to it. Then sit back and watch which one gets vandalized first.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 15:37 |

I thought it bizarre that anyone would think Soros would fund a migrant caravan at election time: it seemed like the caravan just gave Trump a vaguely legitimate-sounding excuse to act tough and motivate the anti-immigration vote .

Overrated as a bogeyman, yes, certainly . However, g uy whose wartime activities in avoiding the Holocaust consisted of assisting in taking inventory of the households of dispossessed Jews... Whether he’s as Jewish or unJewish or neither as a typical camp Capo really would depend on your point of view, but his later “ha ha I shorted the pound” is the hallmark of a very special sort of dick.
There’s an interview out there in which he is... singularly unconcerned
about the collaboration stuff
, whether you’d say he had no other choice or not. “It’s funny, but those were some of the happiest years of my life” or something like.
You can also debate back and forth over whether the countries that have convicted him of this or that in absentia are clown countries, but “convicting him because he’s a dick” is a more clearly indicated motive than convicting him for being a Jew.
Actually, a special count in my dislikes for the man is that by (seemingly) trying to be an International Money Overlord he is feeding every possible conspiracist’s wildest imagination. Particularly about Jews.

I was going to write something but the ADL puts it so much clearer than I ever could:
https://www.adl.org/blog/the-anti-semitism-lurking-behind-george-soros-conspiracy-theories
TL/DR
It’s probably not anti
semitic on it’s own but the whole [insert prominent Jew here]
puppet master of the world is a highly anti
semitic trope that’s been around for centuries and the whole weird
George Soros thing on the right has helped to further spread antisemitism.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 15:45 |

No - similar to numbers multiple cases of bigotry cancel each-other out. It would just be, like, semitic.

It’s funny, how the people who’re afraid of Soros also tend to be the sort that give the “it’s his money, he made it, let him spend it how he wants” spiel to justify basically anything - if some other rich guy is doing it.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 15:48 |

I’ve seen it explained that Soros wa s expecting Trump to react against the caravan with lethal force and thus making America look bad.
I mean sure, but if we entertain that theory we’re also saying that the Trump Administration is incapable of resolving a situation every modern President has faced without resorting to killing. I think that would be a worse look for Trump than it would be for Soros.

“ (seemingly) trying to be an International Money Overlord he is feeding every possible conspiracist’s wildest imagination. Particularly about Jews.”
If a Jew is successful
in baking or trading
he’s an International

![]() 11/21/2018 at 15:58 |

I was referring to the political activism and his speculation on the pound particularly, but other highly leveraged currency investment as well
, which goes *just a tad* beyond “being successful”. One does not get the nickname “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England”
from admirers
for mere innocent success. It’s not war profiteering, but some might question the ethics, and have.

if you end up taking it down, take precautions - wear gloves and check for cameras. sometimes this stuff is bait, if it was put up by fascists and not just a run-of-the-mill conspiracy theorist those fucks still like putting razor blades under their stickers.

![]() 11/21/2018 at 16:11 |

My understanding is he’s kind of like the left’s version of the Koch brothers.
I think it’s a square and rectangle sorta thing. I’m sure anti-semites hate Soros and think he proves their views on jews
, but I’m sure there’s plenty of people who don’t like him, but aren’t anti-s
emitic
.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 16:14 |
|
Soros might be Jewish, but he was a Nazi sympathizer, so there’s that. Fact is, he’s a polarizing, shady character who funds a lot of unscrupulous far-left political groups and causes. The right has their own version in the Koch brothers. Either way, I would say that any energy put into worrying about anti-Semitism in a politically oriented suburban yard sign would a waste.
But I feel like maybe somebody was thinking this would be a fun way to fire up political Oppos going into a three day weekend....

The logic in your last paragraph is really something. “I dislike the guy because I personally subscribe to an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory about him , and thus others might too, and it’s therefore his fault (for being successful) t hat these people are anti-Semites.”
![]() 11/21/2018 at 16:17 |
|
Yeah, it’s clearly the victim of conspiracy-theorist slander’s fault that semiliterate conspiracy theorists like to slander him. The successful Jew is the real anti-Semite. I think I need to sit down.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 16:25 |
|
I personally subscribe to an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory about him
K. What is this theory: that he likes to play the money markets in ways that some people don’t like, to increase his pocketbook, which in turn he uses to forward his political aims in a strategic manner? Wowz. I can smell the hilters.
Actually, it’s to his advantage that said fucknuggets
exist, because it makes any legitimate criticism of him quite difficult. As you demonstrate.

The vast majority of the population in the US doesn’t know George Soros is Jewish, So, no, this is not an anti Semitic dog whistle.
The Soros name is a household word in the US for his support of or globalism, collectivism, and unilateral disarmament of civilians. His name is associated with the threat of rule by “intellectual elites” that would restrict freedom for the good of those that don’t know any better.
If his name is a dog whistle, it’s a reference to a basket of leftist agenda items. It’s got nothing to do with being a Jew. The American right wing loves Jews and is fascinated with Israel to a fault.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 16:34 |

As for your last paragraph, it's more of my wife (and therefore technically my kids) is Jewish, so I'd really like to get a different perspective before I get pissed some asshole is conflating my family into some globalist conspiracy bullshit.

In general your correct , except that whole Pittsburgh shooting kinda puts a damper on things. Far right racists touting shit like global elitists running the world (classic ati semetic rhetoric) and Clinton running a child smuggling ring out of a pizza parlor are my concern.

No... it’s an anti-Democrat dog whistle as Soros made a lot of donations to get more Democrats elected in the recent mid term elections.
It’s also another example of Republican Hypocrisy as they have more than their share of money-donating supporters.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 17:12 |

“Soros might be Jewish, but he was a Nazi sympathizer,”
No. That’s false.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/george-soros-ss-nazi-germany/
Stop repeating Republican lies and bullshit.
“Fact is, he’s a polarizing, shady character who funds a lot of unscrupulous far-left political groups and causes.”
No he’s not... unless you’re anti-marijuana, anti-drug enforcement reform and against expanding rehab programs. And there’s other stuff he supports that the Republicans simply don’t like.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Soros#Political_involvement
But that doesn’t make him shady. And compared to Crooked Trump, he’s a friggin’ angel.

yeah, but these are people who think liberalism is evil and anti-american.
you can’t reason with unreasonable people.

one particular former writer at TTAC despises him because of that story (and dismisses everything Snopes says is a lie because they’re liberals). But then again, this person seems to define “leftist” as “anyone who isn’t in an ultra-conservative Orthodox sect.”
![]() 11/21/2018 at 17:35 |

That's where I included the Stupid category. The whole Jews controlling the world this is anti semetic, but Soros has almost gone beyond that

There’s nothing wrong with reasoned criticism of specific trades or business practices or disagreement with certain political beliefs, and it’s not difficult to offer it in terms that don’t rely on anti-Semitic tropes or conspiracy theories. However, characterizing one of many investors and market movers who have successfully bet on currency movements as “trying to be an International Money Overlord” (which, if it is not an appeal to anti-Semitic tropes about Jewish bankers, is meaningless), framing his political activism as inherently nefarious, suggesting that these activities—none of which differ significantly from those of any number of other wealthy people, Jews and gentiles alike—“feed[] every possible conspiracist’s wildest imagination” and your personal animus, and thus implying that the anti-Semitism is not only his own fault but also advantageous, all fails that extremely easy test.
![]() 11/21/2018 at 18:03 |

Everybody has to aspire to something. Might as well be a Bond villain. I sure as fuck don’t remember Auric Goldfinger being particularly Jewish
as such
. Max Zorin even less so. If noting that banker types are sometimes less than ethical (from my perspective) is inherently anti-semitic, well, lock me up.
There’s no shortage of “evil banksters” rhetoric from those politically on the same side as Georgie either , let me tell you. Lurid stuff.
Actually, what I phrased badly was “ah, fuck, why does
he
have to be Jewish”. Because it’s a cart-before-horse thing. I had heard of him in context of shenanigans before I heard that he was, and it’s the perfect armor for doing anything that anyone might describe in negative tropes. “You’re just saying that because I’m Jewish”.
I’m allowed to disagree with his philanthropic aims. Strongly.

The amount of casual antisemitism and whataboutism in this thread is sad.
The anti-Soros meme has really gone mainstream.
No amount of fact checking will help unfortunately.
Many Jews supported Hitler (voluntarily) . Many Jews were forced to. Neither of those facts make obvious antisemitic attacks ok.
